Milton Hershey’s life in his younger years is explored in this biography aimed at children ages 9-12. He did not become an instant success in the chocolate business. Like so many noteworthy individuals, he had his own trials to overcome which started early on when he was forced to quit school to help his family. He later showed his grit by continuing to pursue his dreams even after enduring two failed business attempts. Rather than walk away with his tail between his legs, he decided to keep on trying. Milton Hershey’s biography serves as a fine model of perseverance mixed with a strong work ethic.

This is a fine introduction to biographies if your child is not accustomed to reading this type of book. For people who are home schooling, this could be a wonderful addition to a thematic unit, since chocolate ties in so well with both science and culture. This would work great as a literary component!
