Why Biographies for Children?

One of the greatest gifts we can ever give our children is the love of reading. An appreciation for history and the power of the human spirit rank right up there as well. There are many, many advantages to encouraging your child or children to read biographies for children.  One of the first advantages is that it will give your child or children another positive role model to emulate. If you are searching for reading material for your child, you are probably a parent who cares deeply about the welfare of your child. Sadly, not all children are blessed with such strong role models.

Any good parent will want to encourage their child in cultivating positive traits such as integrity, hard work, kindness, compassion, and on the list goes.  The world of biographies helps children to learn about characters from history, from Florence Nightingale to Albert Einstein, that made a positive difference in the world, and it will encourage them to want to emulate such heroes from history.

Encouraging your child to read in general has many benefits as it helps them to have a longer attention span, it helps them to learn about the world around them, and it helps them to learn new vocabulary as they read books about topics that perhaps they do not touch on most in their day to day life.  Book reading is a hobby that should be encouraged in children of all ages once they know how to read.

If you are looking for biography books for children that are appropriate to their age, then you do not have to look very long.  Libraries are a fantastic place to find all sorts of biographies for kids for free.  You can take your child there and have him or her choose which ones interest them and then check them out.  You may, however, want to have a look at the books they are picking before they check them out to make sure that they are good, factual biographies or autobiographies for children. This can allow you to see whether the biographies in question are actually appropriate to the child’s age, or even just to know what they are reading so that you will be able to explain things to them that they may not understand clearly.

Many companies make biographies for children.  Ladybird produces some very good biographies along with some of their other educational books.  They cover older characters such as Henry VIII and Richard the Lionhearted as well as characters such as Queen Victoria and Florence Nightingale.  Ladybird also has a couple books in their series that, while they are not actual biographies, tell about a certain race of people in ancient times. For example, the ancient Romans or ancient Chinese and it gives a good background of what the culture was like then and they often include a bit about the lives of famous men from that time period.  Ladybird biography books also have a lot of pictures as well.  Another very good option are Dorling Kindersley books.  Dorling Kindersley books in general are not cheap but they are all very good quality.  They have readers that are numbered in difficulty from levels one to four, with four being the most difficult.  Levels three and four both have some biographies in them and they not only tell the life story of the person but they also have small inserts explaining certain details of the culture and customs of the country at that time period to provide the children the helpful information they would need to understand the story better.
